A Pattern of Nature

The head of a dandelion forms an interesting pattern with hundreds of florets, which are tiny flowers that form a collective flower head, with seed heads on the bottom. There were countless more of these dandelions throughout West Michigan today, and I’m sure there will be more in the near future.

I photographed this Mourning Dove nest with its two eggs today. I’ve never seen one before. It was quite a bit smaller than the Eagle’s Nest I found yesterday 
Snake in the Grass

I ran across this Eastern Hognose snake while visiting the Riley Trails natural area in Ottawa County, Michigan today. It was about 3 feet long and on the ground among the pine needles. The pattern and coloring of it’s scales were very interesting as seen in this close up view.

Minding the Eagle’s Nest

I found this mother American Bald Eagle minding her large nest today in Western Michigan. A typical Eagle’s nest weighs about 2,000 pounds, but there have been reports that they can reach almost 6,000 pounds!
