I found this unusual looking plant recently near a Southwest Michigan lake. I’d be interested to see if anyone knows what this might be :)

I found this colorful caterpillar on a reed recently in a wetland area of Zeeland, Michigan. Perhaps someone reading this can comment on what type of caterpillar it could be.

Green Climber

I’m not certain of the type of bug this is, but I found it climbing a cattail in a wetland area of Zeeland, Michigan recently. It was small, approximately 1/4 inch long. I used my 50mm macro, having to stretch as far as I could to reach the tiny creature.

I finally had the opportunity to photograph Cardinal flowers growing in the wild. I’ve heard how beautiful they are, but seeing is believing. They thrive in wet conditions and that’s where I found these, near a bridge in a wetland area of Zeeland, Michigan today.

Macro Beetle

I found this beetle on top of a flowering cluster what I believe to be Queen Anne’s Lace today in Zeeland, Michigan. I used my macro lens to get a detailed view.

EgretFlying

I spotted this Great Egret in a nearby pond this afternoon. I was happy to capture the moment it took flight from the water as well as when it flew overhead. It’s amazing how light and perspective can change the look and feel of a photograph. These photos were taken seconds apart :)

Forest Butterfly

I found what I believe to be a Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly peacefully resting on a plant just above the forest floor. I made the discovery as I was hiking recently in an Ottawa County, Michigan wooded area. I’ve seen these fly by often, but rarely get the opportunity to approach one at rest.

Gathering Clouds

Shortly before sunset yesterday, large billowing clouds were growing toward the east. I captured the moment with a forest line pictured in the foreground.

Field of Forever

I found this field of flowers that seemed to stretch on forever when I went out yesterday. It’s amazing what we can find practically in our backyards if we just take the time to go out and look :)

The Beauty of Joe-Pye Weed

I found this Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium) growing in a local wetland yesterday. The name of the plant originates from Joe Pye (Jopi in the native tongue) who was a Native American healer in the New England area during the early 1800’s. He used the plant to treat fevers.
