Beauty in the Wind

BlueButterflyWindy

I found this tiny blue butterfly,  perhaps an inch wide, as it was finding nectar late this afternoon. It was remarkable that the small insect could do so in the very windy conditions that preceded a storm that is expected to come to the area tonight. Hunting Mosquitos

I found this damselfly perched on a leaf and ready to fly as it was waiting for its prey to get in range. It seemed to be hunting mosquitos. It won’t go hungry anytime soon because this has been a very bad year for mosquitos. (Click on this or any of my other images to see an enlarged more detailed view)

If you’ve ever wondered what a mosquito looks like after taking a bite out of you, here’s one with a full stomach. The mosquitos were out in force this afternoon when I spotted this one at rest. I’m not sure who’s blood it is full of. I’m not sure I want to know…  (click image to see an enlarged more detailed version)

A Scarce Plant – Indian Pipe

I photographed this grouping of Indian Pipe plant today in Southwest Michigan. This plant is known to be generally scarce or rare in occurrence and was the first time I’ve seen it myself. This white plant does not contain chlorophyll. Being a parasitic plant, it derives its energy from fungi hosts. They flower from summer through early Autumn.

I found this Great Blue Heron today watching for prey over a local pond. Fish are among its favorite foods along with frogs. Both are in abundance at the pond it was searching.

I was happy to get very close to this Great Blue Heron today as it was flying in a local wetland area. I saw three more nearby, but this was my favorite flight photo from today. (click on this or any of my images to see an enlarged more detailed version)

Peace Among the Green

The waters of a local pond reflected the surrounding green foliage as I found this duck floating peacefully among lily pads today.
