Dusk – Water – Trees – Clouds – Michigan

There’s something special and wonderful about dusk in Michigan during Autumn. I found this scene on a waterway in the Upper Peninsula.

Alone in a Tree

I spotted this Green Heron as it was perched in a tree located near a wetland area in Ottawa County, Michigan. The sun was low in the sky and illuminated its feathers. It was hot at 90 degrees and very humid at the time.

Seizing the Light, Arresting Flight

“I have seized the light. I have arrested its flight.” – French scientist Louis Daguerre 1839 –   This quote seemed appropriate on several levels for the photo I took toward sunset yesterday in a wetland area of Zeeland, Michigan. I froze the Cedar Waxwing in flight, while it was lit with golden light. Daguerre is perhaps the most well known father of photography, having created the daguerreotype (French: daguerréotype) process in 1839. (Click on the image for an enlarged more detailed version).

Winged Tiger

As I walked near sunset yesterday in a West Michigan wetland area, I noticed this Great Horned Owl watching me. They were known as Winged Tigers by early naturalists. (they were also called Hoot Owls and Tiger Owls). This one looked to be about 25 inches tall (63.5 cm). I was happy I had my camera with me :) (Click on the image to see an enlarged more detailed version)

Bucolic Scene

I ran across this very old barn in a country setting today.  I think many people share a special feeling about country scenes and the emotions they invoke. Who knows how many decades this old barn has remained standing as crops continue to grow near it every season.

Striking Color

The coloring of Indigo Buntings are quite striking. I was very happy to photograph this one as it was eating a seed. This was my first opportunity to see this type of bird in Michigan. They migrate from southern Canada to northern Florida during the breeding season and spend their winters in South America.

Forest Shoreline

I enjoyed this view of a green shoreline on a cliff near the blue waters of Lake Michigan in St. Joseph, Mi. The colors of the trees and lake were vibrant on this summer afternoon.

Color at a Macro Level

I made good use of my macro lens today. I was walking along a forest path when I glanced over to a leaf where I noticed this fly. From a distance it seemed like nothing special, certainly not colorful in any way. But as I carefully moved in closer with my macro lens to the flying insect, brilliant details and rainbow colors were revealed.  The fly was perhaps a quarter of an inch long, but seen up close many details and patterns emerge :)

Woodpecker

On a recent walk through a forest in Ottawa County, Michigan, I noticed what I believe to be a Downy Woodpecker working on a tree looking for insects. It didn’t seem to notice or care that I was photographing it as the bird continued to peck and climb the tree while I captured the event.

Evergreen

I found this evergreen seed grouping recently in a nearby Southwest Michigan park on another beautiful Spring day.
