Lupine Plant

The Lupine plant, genus Lupinus in the pea family.
I found these in Muskegon County, Michigan yesterday along with some Karner Blue butterflies. The caterpillars of the Karner Blue feed only on the Lupine and can’t survive without it. Since the habitat for the Lupine has been reduced dramatically, it’s affected the Karner Blue population, which is currently an “at risk” species.

I found some Karner Blue Butterflies in Muskegon County yesterday. As they open their wings you see their iridescent blue coloring. I was happy to find these since they are an “at risk” species that depend entirely on Lupine plants for their caterpillars to feed on. I found these near a grouping of Lupine.

We have another sunny blue sky January day in West Michigan! This majestic American Bald Eagle, which I found in Ottawa County, Michigan today, was perched in a tree overlooking some nearby water.
