Red Among the Green

As I walked through a West Michigan forest today, I spotted these red leaves among all the green. I wondered if the plant may have been stressed, causing the color change. In any case, I took the opportunity to capture its beauty with my camera.

Forest Floor in Autumn

I noticed this Oak leaf resting on some green moss today while walking through a wooded area in Muskegon, Michigan. The intricate veins throughout the leaf structure looked interesting to me. This particular example must have fallen recently as it appeared more fresh than the surrounding leaves.

Autumn Road

I found this country road near Grand Haven, Michigan recently and enjoyed the Autumn view. Most of the colorful leaves in the area are gone now as winter approaches.

Autumn Glory

Autumn is one of my favorite times of year, in large part due to the beautiful colors that seemingly explode from the trees. I decided to focus on a more detailed photo of a leaf and found it interesting to add a layered look to the image by positioning the angle of view to show another leaf behind the one in the foreground. A Leaf with Wings

As I walked along a path shortly after a brief rain shower in Zeeland, Michigan recently, a white moth flew in front of me and landed on this green leaf. I used my Canon 50mm F-2.5 Macro lens to capture this moment as the tiny1 inch wide moth rested with its wings spread. I don’t remember ever seeing this type of moth before.

I found this Sandhill Crane flying over an Allegan County, Michigan wetland area this afternoon. I was fortunate enough that it flew fairly close overhead as the sun was shining through its wings. The end result displayed the detail of the feather patterns nicely.

Emerald Dream

As I walked through a West Michigan forest today, I found the bottom of this tree covered in a vibrant green moss. The color reminded me of emeralds as it seemed to glow clinging to the trunk of the tree. Normally this far into January in West Michigan, the ground would be covered with snow. But with temperatures reaching well into the 50’s, the surrounding carpet of leaves displayed a nice backdrop for the vibrant green.

I found this mushroom growing among Autumn leaves on a West Michigan forest floor. I liked how the earth tones complemented each other with the composition.

Striking Colors

These colorful leaves caught my eye while I was out in Holland, Michigan today. The color change may have been the result of heat stress to the plant since we have had several consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 90 degree Fahrenheit in the area. I used natural lighting to photograph these leaves. There was a mixture of shade with the sun back lighting some of the surrounding vegetation. I used a 200 mm F-2.8 lens wide open to help separate the main subject from the out of focus background. The bright red coloring acted as another separation element  from the green background in the composition and yet connected to it with the green veins of the leaves.
