Abstract Sunset

I liked the abstract effect created by the high contrast of dark silhouetted trees, along with the bright vivid coloring of the sky as I photographed this West Michigan sunset recently.
Flying Blue

I spotted this Great Blue Heron flying along a tree line yesterday in the Upper Macatawa Natural Area of Ottawa County, Michigan. The area hasn’t had any rain for over three weeks, along with temperature regularly reaching over 90 degrees and sometimes over 100. The result being many ponds and wetland areas are drying up making it more difficult for wetland wildlife to survive.
Striking Colors

These colorful leaves caught my eye while I was out in Holland, Michigan today. The color change may have been the result of heat stress to the plant since we have had several consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 90 degree Fahrenheit in the area. I used natural lighting to photograph these leaves. There was a mixture of shade with the sun back lighting some of the surrounding vegetation. I used a 200 mm F-2.8 lens wide open to help separate the main subject from the out of focus background. The bright red coloring acted as another separation element from the green background in the composition and yet connected to it with the green veins of the leaves.

The Beauty of Slime Mold?

This is something new to me. I ran across this during a forest walk in Muskegon County, Michigan a few days ago. It was growing on a fallen tree. I believe it to be some type of slime mold. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It did make for an interesting abstract with its pink color set against the surrounding green moss and dark wood background.
Butterfly in the Woods

I found this butterfly resting on a leaf in a Muskegon County, Michigan forest recently. I’m not sure its type, but the habitat it resided in was a heavily wooded area. I used the equivalent of a 400mm lens to shoot from a distance and reduce the chances it would fly away before I could get the photo.
