Peak a boo, Eye see you

Copyright Jeffrey Foltice

This little Screech Owl displayed its ability to hide in plain sight pretty well today as I photographed it peaking from inside a hollow tree trunk while it blended in with the bark patterns. This was one of many birds available to see for visitors to the Outdoor Discovery Center during the annual Winterfest which was held today.

Emerald Dream

As I walked through a West Michigan forest today, I found the bottom of this tree covered in a vibrant green moss. The color reminded me of emeralds as it seemed to glow clinging to the trunk of the tree. Normally this far into January in West Michigan, the ground would be covered with snow. But with temperatures reaching well into the 50’s, the surrounding carpet of leaves displayed a nice backdrop for the vibrant green.

Patterns in Nature

This pine cone that I found today displayed its interesting pattern, texture, and coloring as I walked through a local West Michigan forest today. I decided to photograph it with my Canon 50 mm F-2.5 macro lens to get a closer view of the intricate patterns.

Serenity of Nature

I enjoyed this Winter sunset sky in Holland, Michigan today. The trees I found looked quite striking in silhouette displaying the beauty of their form as they stretched out in all directions with the colorful sky as a backdrop.

I found this fungi growing while I went for a walk last Sunday. It had emerged from a tree that had fallen long ago in a local West Michigan forest.

Mountains of Clouds

I found this wetland in Holland, Michigan to be a great open area to see the mountains of clouds pass overhead. If you look closely, in the upper left of the photo, you can see a flock of birds flying past. Prints and greeting cards of this image are available by clicking on the photo below:

Abstract Sunset

I liked the abstract effect created by the high contrast of dark silhouetted trees, along with the bright vivid coloring of the sky as I photographed this West Michigan sunset recently.

Flying Blue

Copyright Jeffrey Foltice

I spotted this Great Blue Heron flying along a tree line yesterday in the Upper Macatawa Natural Area of Ottawa County, Michigan. The area hasn’t had any rain for over three weeks, along with temperature regularly reaching over 90 degrees and sometimes over 100. The result being many ponds and wetland areas are drying up making it more difficult for wetland wildlife to survive.
