Nice Discovery

As I noticed a butterfly floating near some flowers in the distance, I moved in to photograph it. But as I arrived, the butterfly had flown away. As I looked closely examining the flowers, I discovered a fly glistening in the sunlight displaying its own colors. One of the nice things about nature photography is that you never know what you may run across 🙂

Turbulent Waters

Last Sunday there was an unusually windy afternoon near Lake Michigan with gusts in the 40 mph range. I decided to see how the lake’s waves were as they came in on a frozen beach. I was surprised by the intensity of those waves as well as the color variations as the sun lit them from behind.

I decided to create this image in grayscale, emphasizing the high contrast.

As the sun neared the horizon, the color of the water turned golden.

And as the sun ended the day, the color became more intense.

Pink Surprise

I found this little pink colored surprise waiting for me outside my door today and had to share it here. It actually was quite large for moths I’ve seen, this one measuring about 4 inches wingtip to wingtip. Its been a while since I posted, hopefully I’ll have more time the rest of this summer. In the meantime, enjoy nature’s work of art here 🙂

Note: A good friend of mine pointed out that this is probably an Imperial Moth. Here’s a link with more info 🙂

Flowering Nature

As a follow up to my last post of butterflies I’ve photographed, I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the flowers I’ve found. Always a nice surprise when I run across them in my travels, they offer all of us an opportunity to appreciate natural beauty.

Tulip Time Begins!

Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan begins this weekend. Visitors are drawn to the area’s main attraction – approximately 4.5 million tulip bulbs! They are located throughout the city. You can see a few I’ve photographed below. If you visit the area, be prepared to see parades, dutch dancers in wooden shoes, and lots of smiles 🙂

Frozen Under the Sun

I found this lone photographer on the icy beach in South Haven near frozen Lake Michigan as the sun was beginning to set today. I also took advantage of the opportunity to capture the image below of the Lighthouse and pier that was close by. The lighthouse has been standing sentinel there since 1903.

Changing Sky

The sunset was amazing tonight in Southwest, Michigan. The colors intensified and changed during and after the sun went below the horizon. I was in an agricultural area and found the barn pictured above made for an interesting subject in the foreground.

For the next image I found this tangle of trees to look interesting as they stood starkly against the blazing sky…

For the final image I combined a man made element of some farm architecture with a grouping of trees as the sky turned a more deep red color.

On my way to a photo shoot early one morning in Michigan, I was happy to see this spectacular sky. Needless to say I quickly found a spot to grab the shot 🙂
