Nice Discovery

As I noticed a butterfly floating near some flowers in the distance, I moved in to photograph it. But as I arrived, the butterfly had flown away. As I looked closely examining the flowers, I discovered a fly glistening in the sunlight displaying its own colors. One of the nice things about nature photography is that you never know what you may run across 🙂

Beauty in Nature

The local rooster decided to visit again today looking for the bird feeder overflow of seeds. This time he allowed me to photograph him much closer. I was impressed with the beauty of his feathers as you can see in the images below 🙂

Butterfly Encounters

It’s been quite a while since I’ve had the opportunity to see so many butterflies in one day. It looks like my timing was just right as I found and photographed a few today. The first I discovered was a Little Wood-Satyr shown below:

I used my Canon 50mm Macro lens. I’ve found it rare that butterflies will allow me to approach so closely in nature, but this and others today didn’t seem to be disturbed in the least by my presence, no matter how close I was.

The next was a small butterfly enjoying butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa).I spotted it at the base of a fairly steep hill about 40 feet away, but I was determined to get close enough to use my macro lens and reveal the beautiful detail I knew would be there.

Finally, I saw an area of milkweed that several Great Spangled Fritillary butterflies were busy gathering nectar from. Again, this one and others allowed me to get in as close as I liked with my macro lens:

Dream of a Man, or a Butterfly…

“Once Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a fluttering butterfly. What fun he had, doing as he pleased! He did not know he was Zhou. Suddenly he woke up and found himself to be Zhou. He did not know whether Zhou had dreamed he was a butterfly or a butterfly had dreamed he was Zhou. Between Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is what is meant by the transformation of things,”  — Zhuangzi (Chinese philosopher c. 369 BC – c. 286 BC)

Overwhelming Beauty

Stunning1

The patterns and colors on this Buckeye Butterfly are amazing to behold, and in this case, the surrounding colors from Autumn leaves which form the background complement its beauty with their own stunning colors. I shot this in Autumn using a Macro Extension Tube which gave great separation from the background, but left a very shallow depth of field for the subject’s focus. Despite these challenges, I am happy with the result.
