First Steps

I captured the moment this little one walked from a man to a woman, most likely its parents, on the north breakwater light in Ludington, Michigan’s Stern park as the sun was setting. This lighthouse was voted one of the top 10 lighthouses to see in the U.S. by the Weather Channel. I think this family moment added its own beauty to the scene.

Look Ma, No Wings!

I found this pair of birds today ( House Finches? ) as one was showing off, speeding through the air without the use of its wings. Of course that was just for the split second I froze the moment with my camera 🙂

Greater Yellowlegs

I found these Greater Yellowlegs wading in water yesterday. I don’t ever remember seeing this type of bird before. I’m not sure if they spend the summer here or may have been passing through the area. In any case, I’m happy to have run across them while I had my camera with me 🙂

Red-Winged Blackbird

I found this Red-winged blackbird yesterday as it was resting on a yellow colored signpost. This is the closest I’ve been to one, that is if you don’t count the ones that have dove at my head over the years. They are very protective of their territory and will do that if you inadvertently get too close to a nest, as I have done.

Seedpod

I spotted this seedpod along the roadside yesterday and thought it was interesting enough to photograph. It appeared to have some remaining seeds in the upper left pod.

Yellow Gold

This American Goldfinch decided to visit today. I was happy where it landed allowing me to use the lattice as a framing device for the photo. It was pausing for a moment with a sunflower seed in its mouth 🙂

Discovery in the Grass

I found this Northern Flicker yesterday as it was sitting in a field under sunny skies. I like this angle which displays the distinctive red mark on the back of its head. The Northern Flicker is a member of the woodpecker family. I’ve seen a few over the years, but this is the closest I’ve been to one.

Water Skimming

I found this pair of Bufflehead ducks skimming along the water yesterday. Their skill in flying so close to the waves and each other was a sight to behold.

Sign of Spring

This morning I saw the first robin of the year here as the skies were sunny and beginning to melt the recent snowfall. Its been a mild winter in Southwest Michigan, although the month of March has been colder and had its share of snowfall so far. I’m looking forward to no more snow soon until next winter 🙂

Passing Through

These starlings paused to rest as they seemed to be passing through the area. I’ve noticed bird activity starting to pick up lately. Despite recent snowfall, they seem to sense Spring is on the way 🙂
